Insight behind the scenes of product development
Interview with WEINSBERG product designer Till Karrenbrock
What was the goal in redesigning the CaraCompact EDITION [PEPPER]?
Of course, the focus is on an optimal price‐performance ratio with high quality. The current PEPPER was now almost 10 years old. Of course, a lot has happened in this time and it deserves a new modern look.
We looked at a lot of different functionalities and thought about how we could optimize them. However, I find it very important that the PEPPER is a motorhome with its own character. Almost all motorhomes on the market are interchangeable. The PEPPER has its own DNA and is simply the PEPPER. This identity, which so many campers love, had to be retained at all costs.
Which needs or trends have driven you the most — from the customer side or from the market?
Basically, I have the ambition to do something new with every project. The PEPPER is built for the people who spend their holidays with it. There is a huge PEPPER community that exchanges ideas – so our goal was to put ourselves in people’s shoes and bring in our own camping experiences. So for me personally, the focus is definitely on people.
How long did the process take from the initial idea to the final decision?
I have been working on the previous PEPPER since 2019. Since then, I’ve been happy about every copper sticker I come across on the highway. However, the concrete new project began about a year and a half ago. The very first prototype was about, among other things, the stair step – which was built up in many variants and tested extensively, detached from the rest of the design. After more than a year before publication, we showed our ideas to campers from the PEPPER community and got great inspiration for further solutions.
Were there any special challenges during the implementation (e.g. space utilization, weight, production) and how did you solve them?
There were certainly many challenges, but we were able to solve them very well. I’ll pick out two examples:
Space optimization: You can’t fit utensils in an aluminium ladder. The space under the inclined ladder is actually wasted. Since we now have stairs, we can store shoes here, for example.
Ergonomics: We have integrated a lumbar support in the seating area. However, we have found out that this bench is very often sat transversely. So you can put your legs up and look out of the door. So we designed the upholstery in such a way that you can remove the lumbar support and lean it against the outer wall. This makes the seat cushion much more comfortable and even slightly wider in the transverse direction. so so gestaltet, dass man die Lordosenstütze herausnehmen kann und diese an die Aussenwand lehnen kann. So wird das Sitzpolster in Quer‐Richtung deutlich angenehmer und sogar etwas breiter.
Was there a feature or detail that you are particularly proud of — and why?
The central challenge with PEPPER is, of course, to find solutions that make the product even better without increasing the price at the same time. For example, we were able to implement an integrated rear end on the exterior, which is rare even in high‐priced motorhomes. In addition to the high‐quality look, there is even a gain in space in the interior on the outside. But also the bathroom with the swivel wall, one would expect to be in a different price segment.
If you just look at the pure look – I think that the ceiling cabinets on the cab have become much more appealing than on the predecessor. This was done quite late in the project, when I saw the prototype for the first time, I was really surprised at how well it works.
Thank you very much Till for your interesting remarks and all the best for the future!
